In 1718, Edward Teach (or 'Teach', otherwise known as 'Blackbeard') and his group of pirates held the Atlantic seaboard off the Carolinas to ransom for several months, defying all comers.

One of his victims was Captain Robert Clark of the British merchant ship Crowley.

Clark watched as three seemingly innocent sloops and a square-rigged merchantman lying off the entrance to Charleston Harbor ranged alongside his vessel, and then boarded it.

Blackbeard went on to blockade Charleston for the best part of two weeks, capturing at least eight vessels. Why was Blackbeard able to dominate these waters so completely? The answer lies in the ship he commanded, the Queen Anne's Revenge, bristling with 40 guns: she was the most powerful warship in the waters of the Carolinas.

This book will attempt to explain how cut-throats like Blackbeard acquired such powerful ships, as well as examining the range of smaller craft used by pirates, from Caribbean to the Indian Ocean.
