The Roots of Witchcraft
The writing style is a little strange and it's not the best organized presentation I've ever read but I gave it 5 stars anyway because it was so interesting. The book is rather dated, however; I don't know how much of this information has been confirmed or repudiated by more recent research. Taking TROW for what it is, I found it very informative. A background in linguistics is helpful as much of the evidence cited related back to Basque or other pre-Indo-European languages.
The basic theory is that "witchcraft" is/was an expression of Neolithic fertility cults that survived and flourished first, in the pre-Christian world, and later, as the "Old Religion" which the Catholic Church strove mightily to eradicate. That's the theory in a nutshell.
