When I first proposed the idea for this book to Princeton University
Press, I had a completely different kind of project in mind. What was to be a reflection on the triumph and tyranny of numbers in modern societies became instead a work of fiction, a metamorphosis that was only possible thanks to the enthusiastic and unwavering support of Vickie Kearn, my editor at PUP.
I believed that through a fictional story I could more effectively attain my goal of introducing to a large audience certain mathematical concepts and results, some of them rather challenging and with philosophical undertones, in an entertaining way.

I'm Andy Harris, the author of Beginning Flash Game Programming for Dummies. I'm very excited about this book. It's something I've wanted to write for a very long time. I love games, I love programming, and I love teaching. You'll see all three passions combined in this book.
I grew up inventing games long before ordinary people could own a computer. When I got ahold of my first computer, I wrote games on it (and did some serious stuff too.)
My first career was teaching severe disabilities special education. I really enjoyed that job, and it taught me a lot about how to explain things clearly without being insulting. While I was working as a special education teacher, I kept programming. I wrote some games for fun, and did some serious freelance programming, as well as teaching programming part time at the local university.
Now I'm a full time computer science instructor at Indiana University / Purdue University - Indianapolis. (Yes, that is the longest university name in the world.) I teach all kinds of programming languages and styles, but I never forget to have fun and enjoy teaching.
I've written several other books on various programming topics, but this one is special. First, I'm thrilled to be writing in the landmark Dummies series. It's an honor to be associated with such an established title. At the same time, it's fun to work with a publisher that encourages me to write bad puns. That turned out to be no problem, as you'll see. The best part is I get to write about my passion.
Computer games are a lot of fun. So why is it that books about writing games are so painful? I wanted to write a book that was fun, but also teaches you the stuff you need so you can write your own games. If you sit down and work through this book, I promise you you'll be able to make good games.

Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry, Fourth Edition brings clarity and coherence to an often unwieldy discipline, while incorporating the field's most important recent developments and applications.
Before I say anything about this book, I offer for your consideration the fact that I am not a student of biochemistry; I am a physics graduate student. My desire to learn about biochemistry had nothing to do with receiving any sort of degree. Then consider the fact that this is the only Amazon.com review I have ever written. These facts alone should tell you that I must have found this book pretty remarkable.
This text was required for all three of the biochemistry classes I took as an undergraduate student, and it never let me down. It contains a positively HUGE amount of information, which Nelson and Cox have somehow managed to digest and present for the layperson in a way that is both engaging and understandable. The writing style is superb, and the visual aids are numerous and of exceptionally high quality.
How many times while cramming for the next day's test at 3:00 am have you caught yourself reading material that isn't even covered on the exam, just because it's interesting? It happened to me. And while I will admit to having some pretty nerdy tendencies some times, I don't think I'm quite that abnormal.
Don't listen to the reviewers who say they wish this book went into more depth on some issues, because they should know better. I can assure you that there is no lack of depth here. This is an introductory text. You read it if you want an introduction. If the nitty-gritty were found in introductory texts, there would be no need for advanced texts, now would there?
Coming from a great lover of textbooks, I'll put it to you plainly and simply: Among my top 5 favorite textbooks, this is the only one that isn't about physics. If you are looking for an introductory biochemistry texbook, then I don't believe you can go wrong with this one.

The three-times-a-week weightlifting program in Body for Life is deceptively simple. If you’ve spent any time in the gym, you’ve already done all the exercises. But Phillips includes a couple of high-intensity sets at the end of each exercise that should compound the training effect on each muscle group. Same goes for the cardiovascular exercise he recommends: just 20 minutes, three times a week. But those 20 minutes are spent jacking the intensity up and down, accomplishing more in less time.
Phillips arranges all this into a 12-week program, along with nutritional and motivational tips. Be warned that the nutritional advice gets a little spacey. For example, he puts “carbohydrates” and “vegetables” into separate categories, and recommends three daily doses of a nutritional supplement called Myoplex, which his company manufactures. (Fortunately, he gives tips on how to make each dose taste different, such as by adding drops of peppermint extract.) Despite this strangeness, Body for Life still motivates because so many others have achieved astounding results in similar 12-week windows, and the pictures and testimonials are here as evidence.

This full-size (8A " x 11") paperback book written by Gavin D. S. Harper was a fun read for this longtime rocketeer (since 1966). True to its title, the book is focused on various aspects of model rocketry and continually emphasizes safety. Even with fourteen years in HPR, I found the material interesting and informative.
The projects and information described in the book vary from simple to quite complex. Projects include basic model rocketry, staging, clustering, launch systems, recovery systems, wind tunnels, payloads, and more.
The work is well illustrated with both pictures and schematics. In addition to step-by-step instructions, there are good technical tips, and it is all written in an easy-to-follow order.
There are also numerous other features in addition to "build" projects. A brief discussion of rocketry history starts the book, ranging from the invention of black powder to the U.S. manned moon landing.
Real rocket science interspersed in each chapter simply but accurately explains much of the physics of rocketry. The more technical aspects of our hobby are presented toward the end of the book. These features include rocket math, flight computers, and camera rockets. This book works well with fun parent/child activities. Simple motors can be put together from 35mm film cans with propellant components such as vinegar and Alka-Seltzer tablets.
More complex motors using hydrochloric acid with hydrogen peroxide are also detailed. The wind-tunnel segment was very practical, and I wish that I'd had this available in my younger years when designing my early models.
Chapter 5 is a particularly valuable section for the beginner. There are descriptions and pictures of the construction techniques of all parts of a simple model rocket. It then goes on to cover multistage rockets, boost-gliders, cone rockets, and flying saucers. Probably the most difficult part of successful rocketry, whether it be of model or mid- or high-power, is the recovery system. Chapter 6 has a very good series of sections on various recovery methods and even includes a descent-rate table. The end of Chapter 6 includes articles on constructing strobes for night launches.
Chapter 7 covers launching of model rockets. Again, some very good parent/child projects are described in word and illustration. Several practical launch controllers and pads are described, including construction of a tower launcher. More advanced items, such as clustering and igniters, are also detailed.
The latter chapters discuss more advanced subjects, such as rocket math, aerial photography (still and movie), Barrowman stability, altitude determination, and flight computers. Some of the features I found most interesting were the items about making black powder and the explanation of nozzles and aerodynamics. The book is an easy read in both the length of each feature and the writing style. Do not expect any HPR information, simply enjoy the book for what it is: a good beginners guide that also is interesting to the experienced rocketeer.

"Detective Conan" is a detective mystery manga created by Goushou Aoyama in 1994. It's serialized in the weekly shounen magazine "Shounen Sunday."
There's also an anime series based on the manga. Both manga and anime are wildly popular in Japan, and they are both still ongoing. There are 57+ volumes of the manga published so far, and 400+ episodes of the anime aired. The manga and anime are being released in North America under the name "Case Closed" by VIZ.
